CERPA’s View on the Recent Electricity & Water Tariff Hikes

Ghana’s latest utility adjustments, a 9.8% increase in electricity tariffs and a 15.92% rise in water tariffs  highlight a broader challenge of policy coherence. Although ongoing disinflation and relative exchange rate stability suggest improving economic fundamentals, these tariff revisions risk weakening public confidence in the recovery process.

Our latest analysis highlights:

·       How the 9.8% adjustment in electricity tariffs and the 15.92% increase in water tariffs underscore a broader challenge of policy coherence.

·       Why these tariff revisions may weaken public confidence despite improving macroeconomic indicators such as ongoing disinflation and relative exchange rate stability.

·       How the recently negotiated 10% wage increase is likely to be partially offset by the higher cost of utilities, thereby diminishing real income gains.

·       How the resulting strain on household budgets and business operating costs may impair consumption, investment planning, and overall welfare.

·       Why these pressures could potentially undermine the sustainability of both social and economic stability in the medium term.

“Tariff adjustments must support economic recovery, not erode public confidence or place additional pressure on households and businesses.” This analysis reinforces the need to carefully balance tariff adjustments with the broader goal of safeguarding economic stability and public confidence.
